"Man it was a great night. Everything flowed smoothly and everyone did their thing. The best part about was it was drama free and the cops didn't harass us this time. Not to mention the multiple ciphers where me, J, and Divine play back to back bangers for the MC's to spit to. Can't wait to get the next one popped off. Catch me at hellfirebeats.com." -HellFire

"I like what Hans is doing not giving you the same acts all the time and it turns into one big session including the freestyles before and after the event. Hans is bringing the entire state together with these events and I respect that. Shout out to all the performers especially Skrewtape because that was his 1st. performance since coming home. Another dope event!" -Phil Jackson (103.3 fm SideB Radio)

" The Garden Variety Show is filled with great energy. TCOR (the Custodian of Records) hosts New Jersey's best Hip-Hop event and it's good to see how people respond to the local artist out here. I feel if your in the area and love Hip-Hop, this is something you can't miss . You can find Sol Zalez music and more on : www.solzalez.wordpress.com" -Sol Zalez

"The last Garden Variety that was held on Sat., Oct. 1st., in Trenton NJ, was sensational. Everyone showed who ever was performing, some love, there was no chaos, or drama at anytime. The music selection was excellent, shouts out to Divine Drummah, Hell Fire, and J-Gainey for playing hot shit all night. Can't for get shouts out to Self(Hans No Go), Kasso, and everyone thats really apart of the movement, Side-B Radio, Phil Jackson, you already know brova." -Scatta Rpee

"Garden Variety Show on October 1st was epic. As a first time participant in this monumental event, I was elated. It's rare that you find an event that pocesses so much of the true essence of HipHop. DJ's, Emcees and Fans is all you need. Shout out to Hans aka Self and the whole movement. Can't wait to participate or just be a part of the next event. Get in touch or get touched. Cheee Yeeaah!" -The Mighty Omega Ice

"The Garden Variety Show was unlike any Hip-Hop event I've ever been to in my entire career. The unity of Jersey artists in the building was inspiring and the presence of Phil Jackson's Side-B Radio was definitely felt. With beats by Divine Drummah and Hellfire how could you go wrong?" -Rich Quick

"So you're the mastermind behind 'The
Garden Variety'... What do you tell a
newcomber when they ask what the Garden
Variety is?"
"The Garden Variety show was an idea I had, to
bring all the dopest jersey artists together under
one roof in a non competitive way with the
objective of helping folks get their name out
while unifying with each other (bridging gaps),
and promoting their own music. I fancy myself as
kind’ve a jersey hip hop enthusiast and I always
liked the idea of having one group from Newark,
then another emcee from Paterson and Trenton
and Camden etc.. with different area’s you have
different styles/slang, ways of approaching
music and that’s the beauty of Jersey. Every
town/section is like a different state all together.
Our sound has always been a melting pot.."

" I am a part of a crew based out of Newark called No Name Society which is an
assortment of emcees, dj’s, graff artists and anyone else who supports and
contributes to what we do. And the original GV venue was @ The Armory or as we
liked to call it, the “A.T.F” (Armory Training Facilities) which was In Newark. I
expressed to Datkidd that I wanted to start a showcase there and him, a long with
3 great brothers (owners of the club) gave us the green light to use their
establishment to do our shows. So peace to Subtraxshun, Paul and Teddy!
Im thinking we had like a 2-3 year run there till the bar closed down. I later
connected with Will Kasso (S.A.G.E. Collective) out in Trenton and asked if I could
do a show out there.. being as a lot of performers whom were involved in GV when
it was based in Newark, were trekking all the way from central and south jers so I
figured why not get something positive going out there.
So Kasso, being heavy in the art community was able to find a venue right away.
An abandoned, roofless garage/wharehouse with no number address or
electricity. Which is exactly my kinda shit!! We’re trying to do this at a grass roots
level.. no jiggy ass clubs with asshole bouncers.. so we made it work. Generated
electricity from the neighboring business, kasso had his crew come thru and do
live painting and I got all the emcees. And we’ve been doing the show since april (I
believe) and it keeps getting stronger each time."
"I guess it's pretty obvious why you
named it the Garden Variety being that
it's in Jersey, but I've known of artists
out of state to come through, what type
of crowd are you aiming for and what
type have you noticed is frequenting
The Garden Variety? "

"Though its for the most part, an all
jersey event, I have had artists from
NY/Philly in the past on the flyers. But
the way I see it is that those cities have
very well established music scenes..
while Jersey is like a chicken with its
head cut off running around in the wild
west.. So I think its important that we
have something stable and consistent.
As far as crowds concerned we have
people from all walks of life there. There’
s no velvet rope/vip bullshit. We’re all in
this together."
"What can happen at a typical show that
makes you go away at the end of the
night feeling it was an accomplishment?"
"Hmmm.. seeing someone rip the stage
down or an artist who kept coming back
and getting better each visit. Meeting new
people and finding new talent via the open
mic ciphers we do before each show
commences (that also poses as a
screening process/proving ground for
future gv performers)
As far as accomplishment, its good to
leave with enough money to get a
sandwhich and a Snapple lol"
What are some goals you're still trying to
accomplish?
Right now we’re just trying to get more
financial backing, maybe a possible tour
soon. I dunno… cant call it, the
possibilities can be limited to endless.
Did you expect to have such a large following so soon? why or why not?
I mean we’re still in our infant (or atleast toddler) stages to some degree, like the song says
“we’ve only just begun” ha ha.. some hip hop heads are real finicky.. especially when it
comes to supporting an artist from their area.. its kinda like having a neighbor you grew up
with, went to school with and then find out they rhyme and go “aaah that dude rhymes.. I
know him! Who cares?!” we take a lot for granted. But to answer your question, I didn’t
expect it to get this big and its kind’ve like a higher calling now. A lot of heads look forward
to it and attend faithfully.. I really appreciate that shit forreal! I believe in the proverb “it
takes a village.”
What's some advice for independent artists that you seem to repeat alot?
Hmmm, I don’t like to come off as preachy but if an artist to ask me for advice, I’d say…
ugh.. be an emcee! Know how to rock a crowd. Don’t be a pretentious douche bag lol who
knows though in this day and age, the advice I give you may be totally wrong..
What are your feelings when you hear the statement: 'Hiphop is dead'?
The art form isn’t dead.. a lot of the motivation to be creative is dead to some degree
though..The formula is bland and whack as hell.. back in the days, people/the industry
were still testing the waters.. so u had a group that rapped fast and rocked gumbi’s and a
dude who had a cool ass monotone voice and slow delivery.. now everyone basically raps
the same.. from the main stream down to the underground. But instead of wining and
blogging about it, I’d much rather take a pro active approach in changing that.. part of me
does say fuggit tho.. I mean, who am I to tell someone they need to rap like this or make
beats like that? To Each its own..
