While your walkman got to play your personal mixes, and mixtapes became something you could pick up at the corner store, a demand for creative compilations blossomed into an everyday part of hiphop.
HipHop heads who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s might remember classic mixtapes by Tony Touch, Mister Cee or even Jay Ski. But if you went to college parties on the east coast you may have run across one or two by Jay From Jerz. Inspired by DJ Jay Ski and the Philly underground scene of the early 2000’s, Jay From Jerz used his passion to personally compile the dopest tracks mainstream radio kept forgetting to play. Seeing an over-saturation of basic mixtapes, he set out on a quest to put out mixtapes for the love of true hiphop talent and distributed them widely for others to appreciate for free.
After many years of artist and fan appreciation, Jay From Jerz continues to drop mixtapes at hiphop events from New York to Philly to Delaware and more. In 2013, DJ SoulBuck, who was Digable Planets DJ, was feeling these mixtapes and offered to mix/host JayFromJerz’s next project. Teamed with Krissy B. of MusikReform on the graphics and Lyrically Fit on promotion, JayFromJerz has been dropping dope mixtape after mixtape doing his part to keep true hiphop alive. He once told us “I aint stopping til I die”, and considering he still has ALL the mixtapes he’s ever created I’d say this hiphop head deserves to get his recognition on. Ultimately his goal would be for someone to get put on by being heard on his mixtapes, so we have a message for all DJ’s sincerely from JayFromJerz: “Can you local DJ’s please play local music!?”
